Tenuta Friggiali

Knowledge handed down since the 1500s

Tenuta Friggiali traces its roots back to the 16th century, when it already appeared in the ancient records of the “Augustinians of Montalcino” as a “farmstead with a manor, arable lands, lush vineyards, and woodlands”—enduring testimony to a winemaking calling that has spanned centuries.

A natural amphitheatre between heaven and earth

Spanning approximately 120 hectares of vineyards, olive groves, arable land, and woodlands, Tenuta Friggiali is situated on the southwestern slope of Montalcino. Its vineyards, cascading from an altitude of 450 down to 200 meters, overlook a breathtaking landscape dotted with cypress trees, ancient villas, and enchanting castles.

The vines of Tenuta Friggiali unfold around the winery in a natural embrace, encircling the estate buildings and the Relais, which for years has welcomed lovers of fine wine and the evocative Montalcino countryside.

Frigidi: The Etymology of Freshness

The name itself, “Friggiali,” is believed to derive from the Latin frigidi, evoking the freshness and constant ventilation that define this area.

Here, a subtle yet persistent breeze dries the vines after the rain, helping to keep them healthy, while the cool microclimate and altitude promote a slow, gradual ripening of the grapes.

The terrain, situated upon pietraforte and alberese (calcareous marl) substrates, creates alkaline and sub-alkaline soils rich in active limestone, clay, and minerals. This complex and deep environment provides the clusters with concentration, elegance, and an aromatic profile of great finesse.

The southwestern exposure grants light and warmth during the most vital hours of the day, perfectly balanced by cool nights that enhance the wine’s bouquet and acidity.

The Ancient Ritual of the Harvest

The Ancient Ritual of the Harvest

In this unique setting, the harvest is still conducted by hand, with the same care and patience of days gone by. We gather the fruits of a late ripening—a process that bestows the wine with intense color, phenolic richness, and a personality authentically rooted in its terroir.
