Pietranera Estate

In the Shadow of Antiquity: The Millennial Heart of Tenuta Pietranera

On the southeastern slope of Montalcino lie the magnificent vineyards of Tenuta Pietranera and Poggiotondo, immersed in a landscape of profound historical and natural significance.

Just one kilometer from the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, and a stone’s throw from the Via Francigena—the ancient path of pilgrims journeying to Rome—the vineyards flourish under the imposing presence of Castello della Velona, the ancient manor that commands the valley.

Tenuta Pietranera represents an extraordinary expanse of specialized vineyard which, unlike other hillside plantings in the area, forms a single, continuous block situated on a luminous and sheltered plateau.

This unique layout allows the vines to benefit from constant sunlight and the beneficial protection of Mount Amiata. The mountain casts its shadow only at the very end of the day, offering stable and favorable conditions for the slow ripening of Sangiovese. Here, it is cultivated using the most traditional methods, in full respect of the land’s authenticity.

The vineyards, currently at the peak of their productive capacity in terms of both age and planting density, are characterized by a vigor and vegetative balance that ensure consistent quality and expressive elegance—qualities esteemed on an international level.

What makes this place truly unique is the presence of a monumental, thousand-year-old cork oak—a living symbol of biodiversity, memory, and territorial identity.

This natural monument, stretching its ancient branches toward the young rows of vines, serves as the perfect setting where guests are invited to begin an evocative tasting experience. It is a moment of perfect harmony with nature and history, a sensory introduction before continuing the journey with a more structured approach in the dedicated tasting rooms.

Adjacent to it lies Tenuta Poggiotondo. Recognizable by its harmoniously circular shape, it is one of the estate’s most iconic vineyards, internationally acclaimed for its consistency, superior quality, and expressive elegance.

The Essence of the Vine

The Essence of the Vine

The secret of the estate lies within the earth: the Pietranera vineyards strike their roots into a dark, deep soil that reveals the ancient volcanic nature of nearby Mount Amiata.

This dormant giant is not merely a visual landmark, but a true climatic guardian that shields the vines from fierce winds, creating an ideal microclimate for the birth of wines with a distinctive and rigorous character.
At the beating heart of the property lies the “Vigna della Sughera” (The Cork Oak Vineyard)—a place where nature manifests in its purest form, at once rugged and luxurious.

Here, the vines, cultivated using the traditional spur-pruned cordon method, are shaped by severe winter pruning and meticulous springtime care.

It is from this perfect balance between vegetative vigor and the master’s hand that labels of excellence come to life: from the austere and elegant Pietranera Brunello di Montalcino, to the Rosso di Montalcino, and the enveloping character of Le Logge di Pietranera.

To work this land is to rediscover the geological history of the region: it is not uncommon for the rows to yield fragments of precious alabaster, a testament to the ancient nearby quarries.

These “natural sculptures” symbolize the nobility of a terroir that imparts to the wines the same radiance and solidity of the stone, offering a sip steeped in light, minerality, and millennial history.
