In the Shadow of Antiquity: The Millennial Heart of Tenuta Pietranera
On the southeastern slope of Montalcino lie the magnificent vineyards of Tenuta Pietranera and Poggiotondo, immersed in a landscape of profound historical and natural significance.
Just one kilometer from the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, and a stone’s throw from the Via Francigena—the ancient path of pilgrims journeying to Rome—the vineyards flourish under the imposing presence of Castello della Velona, the ancient manor that commands the valley.
Tenuta Pietranera represents an extraordinary expanse of specialized vineyard which, unlike other hillside plantings in the area, forms a single, continuous block situated on a luminous and sheltered plateau.
This unique layout allows the vines to benefit from constant sunlight and the beneficial protection of Mount Amiata. The mountain casts its shadow only at the very end of the day, offering stable and favorable conditions for the slow ripening of Sangiovese. Here, it is cultivated using the most traditional methods, in full respect of the land’s authenticity.
The vineyards, currently at the peak of their productive capacity in terms of both age and planting density, are characterized by a vigor and vegetative balance that ensure consistent quality and expressive elegance—qualities esteemed on an international level.
